How to Get Remote Jobs With US Companies From Pakistan: Channels, Contracts, Time Zones and Payments

By Omer Muneer Qazi · Updated 2026-10-29 · 12 min read

This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.

To get a remote job with a US company from Pakistan, target roles explicitly open to international or "worldwide" candidates, apply through remote-focused job boards, vetted talent networks, marketplaces and referrals, and show proof of async communication and overlap hours in your portfolio and interviews. Most offers will be independent contractor agreements (often with a Form W-8BEN) or employment through an employer of record. Set up a tested way to receive foreign payments, and consider registering with PSEB.

The competition is global, but Pakistani engineers and specialists win these roles every day. What separates them is targeting, written communication and making the time-zone question easy for the employer.

Key takeaways

  • Filter hard for roles that accept candidates in Pakistan; many "remote" jobs are US-only.
  • Expect contractor or employer-of-record (EOR) arrangements, not direct US employment.
  • Pakistan is UTC+5 year-round: New York 9 am is 6 or 7 pm PKT; California 9 am is 9 or 10 pm.
  • Lead with proof of independent, async work.
  • Sort out payments and PSEB registration before your first invoice.

Step 1: Understand how US companies hire abroad

Arrangement How it works Your status Typical for
Independent contractor You invoice the company for services under a contract Self-employed in Pakistan Startups, small companies, freelancers
Employer of record (EOR) A third party legally employs you locally; the US company directs your work Employee of the EOR in Pakistan Mid-size and larger companies
Marketplace contract Work and payment run through a platform Freelancer on the platform Upwork, Fiverr, vetted networks
Agency or outsourcing firm You're employed by a Pakistani or foreign firm serving US clients Employee of the firm Software houses and staff augmentation

As a contractor, US companies commonly ask foreign individuals for IRS Form W-8BEN, which certifies foreign status for US tax withholding and reporting. It's not filed with the IRS by you; you give it to the payer. If you work through your own company or a US LLC, the paperwork differs; see how to form a US LLC from Pakistan and get advice.

Step 2: Choose roles where you can compete

Remote hiring favors roles with clear, verifiable output:

  • Software engineering (front-end, back-end, full-stack, mobile)
  • DevOps and cloud
  • QA and test automation
  • Data engineering and analytics
  • Shopify, WordPress and e-commerce development
  • Product design and UX
  • Technical writing, customer support and success for SaaS

Pick one target title and level. "Senior React Engineer" is a search you can win; "any IT job" isn't.

Step 3: Find jobs that are actually open to you

Channels, roughly in order of conversion for most people:

  1. Referrals from people already working remotely for US companies.
  2. Vetted talent networks for developers, where screening replaces the CV pile. Toptal, for example, says it accepts fewer than 3% of applicants after a multi-stage process; others work similarly with different bars.
  3. Remote-focused job boards that let you filter by "worldwide" or by country.
  4. LinkedIn with the remote filter and saved searches, plus direct messages to hiring managers.
  5. Freelance marketplaces to build a US client track record first; see Upwork vs Fiverr vs Toptal for developers.
  6. Company career pages of remote-first companies that publish where they can hire.

Read the location line first. Phrases like "US only," "must be authorized to work in the US," or a specific state mean you're not eligible, however good the fit. "Remote, worldwide," "anywhere," "EMEA," or "UTC±3 hours" may include you; when unclear, ask the recruiter before investing time.

Step 4: Make your application easy to say yes to

  • CV: one to two pages, US English, achievement-focused bullets, tech stack per role, links to GitHub and portfolio. No photo, age or marital status.
  • Portfolio: three to five relevant case studies; see our remote developer portfolio guide.
  • LinkedIn: headline with your target role and stack; open-to-work settings; recommendations from past managers. See LinkedIn profile optimization for consultants.
  • Cover note: three short paragraphs: why this company, the most relevant thing you've done, and your overlap hours.
  • Availability line: "Based in Lahore (UTC+5). I can overlap 9 am to 1 pm US Eastern daily and work async otherwise."

Step 5: Handle the time-zone question confidently

Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 and doesn't change for daylight saving. US clocks do, so the gap shifts:

US time US Eastern (New York) US Pacific (California)
9:00 am in the US, during US daylight saving (Mar to early Nov) 6:00 pm PKT 9:00 pm PKT
9:00 am in the US, outside daylight saving 7:00 pm PKT 10:00 pm PKT

Practical patterns that work:

  • Evening overlap for East Coast teams: start your day late morning PKT, overlap 6 pm to 10 pm.
  • Async-first teams: agree on a daily written update and a few fixed meeting slots per week.
  • West Coast teams: overlap is harder; propose early-morning US meetings, which fall in your late evening.

State a schedule you can sustain for years, not one you'll regret in a month.

From experience: Working from Multan with clients in the US, UAE, Canada and Malaysia, I've found that predictability matters more than total overlap. A fixed daily window, written updates before the client wakes up, and fast replies during the overlap build more trust than being online at random hours.

Step 6: Prepare for remote interviews

  1. Tech check: stable internet with a backup (mobile data or a second ISP), a UPS for power cuts, a headset and a quiet room.
  2. Coding interviews: practice live coding while talking through your reasoning in English.
  3. Take-home tasks: treat them like client work: README, tests, clean commits.
  4. System design (senior roles): practice explaining trade-offs on a shared whiteboard.
  5. Behavioral questions: prepare short stories about owning a problem, handling disagreement, and working without supervision.
  6. Salary or rate: know your number in USD before the first call. See how to price freelance development work.

Step 7: Contracts and getting paid

Before you sign, check:

  • Scope, hours or availability expectations, and notice period
  • Rate, currency, invoicing schedule and payment terms
  • IP assignment and confidentiality
  • Equipment and expenses
  • Which law governs the contract and how disputes are handled

Our guide to essential freelancer contract clauses has a checklist.

Receiving money: decide how payments will reach Pakistan (bank transfer to a foreign currency or freelancer account, or a payment service) and test it with a small amount. Compare options in how to receive international payments in Pakistan.

PSEB registration: the Pakistan Software Export Board registers freelancers for Rs 1,000 (new) and Rs 2,000 (renewal), with your personal NTN, CNIC and a bank account certificate; renewals need your latest tax return (as of October 2026). Registration supports banking and the tax treatment of IT export income. For tax specifics, read the freelancer tax guide for Pakistan.

A 30-day job search plan

Week Focus Output
1 Target role, CV, LinkedIn headline and About One polished CV and profile
2 Portfolio: top two case studies and a short video Links you can send in every application
3 Build a list of 30 to 50 companies that hire in your region; ask five people for referrals Tracked list with contacts
4 Apply to 10 to 15 well-matched roles with tailored notes; follow up once after a week Interviews booked, notes on what's working

Track every application in a spreadsheet: company, role, location rules, date, contact, status. After a month, look at where replies came from and double down on that channel.

Red flags in "remote US job" offers

  • Paying a fee to get the job, training or equipment
  • Interviews only by chat, with no video call or real company email
  • Requests for your bank login, CNIC copies before an offer, or to receive and forward money
  • Vague role descriptions with unusually high pay
  • Pressure to start "today" without a contract

Verify the company, the recruiter's LinkedIn profile and the email domain before sharing documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can a US company hire me directly from Pakistan?

Usually as an independent contractor, or through an employer of record (EOR) service that legally employs you in Pakistan on the company's behalf. Direct US employment generally requires US work authorization, which most remote workers abroad don't have. Contractor arrangements are the most common for individuals and small teams; larger companies often prefer EORs.

What tax form does a US company ask a Pakistani contractor for?

As a foreign individual, you're commonly asked for IRS Form W-8BEN, which certifies foreign status of the beneficial owner for US tax withholding and reporting. The IRS says to give it to the payer if you're a foreign person and the beneficial owner of an amount subject to withholding. Companies or LLCs use different forms; ask an adviser.

What working hours do US remote jobs expect from Pakistan?

It depends on the company. Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 all year, so 9 am in New York is 6 pm or 7 pm in Pakistan depending on US daylight saving, and 9 am in California is 9 pm or 10 pm. Many teams ask for two to four hours of overlap; async-first companies may need less.

Should I register with PSEB as a remote worker in Pakistan?

If you earn from exporting IT services, PSEB freelancer registration is worth considering. It costs Rs 1,000 for a new registration and Rs 2,000 for renewal, and needs your personal NTN, CNIC and a bank account certificate, according to PSEB as of October 2026. It supports banking and IT-export tax treatment; confirm current rules with a tax adviser.

Which job boards list remote jobs open to Pakistan?

Use remote-focused boards that let you filter by location or 'worldwide', vetted talent networks for developers, freelance marketplaces, and LinkedIn with the remote filter. Read each listing's location requirements carefully: many 'remote' jobs are restricted to the US or certain time zones. Referrals from people already working remotely are often the strongest route.
