How to hire a freelance SEO expert without the gamble
A plain, step-by-step process for hiring a freelance SEO expert, from writing the brief to signing off the last milestone.
Hiring a freelance SEO expert, step by step
Most bad freelance hires fail at the start, not the end. The brief was vague, the scope was never written down, or payment was not tied to anything you could check. Fix those three things and hiring a SEO expert becomes much less risky.
I have been on the freelancer side of 100+ projects, so this is the process I wish every client used. It works whether you end up hiring me or someone else.
Six steps from brief to handover
- Write a one-page brief
What the SEO expert must deliver, by when, and what done looks like. Include links to sites or tools you like.
- Shortlist three to five people
From referrals, marketplaces or portfolios. Ask them to show Search Console screenshots from past work, not just rank-tracker charts.
- Run a small paid test
Audit five URLs and rank the fixes by impact, with reasons. A half-day task like this shows quality and communication.
- Agree scope and milestones
Fixed price per milestone, with acceptance criteria you can check.
- Handover and ownership
Get the code, accounts, docs and a walkthrough before the final payment.
What I take on as your SEO expert
- SEO audits — a ranked fix list, not a 90-page PDF.
- Technical fixes — crawl, index, speed and schema problems solved in code.
- Keyword plans — pages mapped to what buyers actually search.
- Content briefs — outlines writers can turn into ranking pages.
- AI search — visibility in AI answers as well as Google.
- Reporting — Search Console and GA4 set up so you see progress.
