Claude is a family of large language models made by Anthropic, available through apps for the web, desktop, and phone, through a coding tool called Claude Code, and through an API that developers can build on. When you type a request, Claude predicts a useful response based on patterns learned from a very large amount of text and code, plus whatever you give it in the conversation: files, pasted text, connected apps, and web search results.

That last part matters more than most people realize. Claude is only as good as the context it has. A generic request gets a generic answer. A request that includes your price list, your past proposals, your brand voice, and the client's actual email gets an answer you can send with light edits.

The jobs Claude does well

In a small business, Claude earns its subscription in five areas:

  1. Writing and rewriting. Emails, proposals, quotes, website pages, product descriptions, job posts, policies, scripts, and social posts. It is especially good at taking rough notes and turning them into a clean draft in a specific tone.
  2. Reading and summarizing. Long contracts, vendor terms, meeting transcripts, customer reviews, survey responses, and research reports. It can pull out obligations, deadlines, risks, and decisions in a structured table.
  3. Thinking with you. Pricing scenarios, pros and cons of a decision, a launch plan, a hiring scorecard, a negotiation script. It is a patient sparring partner that does not get tired of "what if."
  4. Working with data. Cleaning a messy CSV, writing spreadsheet formulas, building pivot summaries, spotting outliers, and charting results. On plans with code execution and file creation, it can do the analysis itself and hand you a finished file.
  5. Building small software. Calculators, quote forms, landing pages, internal dashboards, scripts that move data between tools, and full applications when paired with Claude Code.

The jobs where you must be careful

Claude is not a database of facts that is always current. It can misremember details, invent a citation, or apply a rule from the wrong state. It does not know your business unless you tell it. It is weak at tasks that need exact arithmetic over large data unless it is allowed to run code. And it should never be the final decision-maker on anything legal, medical, financial, or safety related.

Warning: The most expensive AI mistake small businesses make is publishing something Claude wrote about a regulation, a price, or a statistic without checking it. Ask Claude to list its claims that need verification, then check those against the official source.

How Claude differs from a search engine

A search engine finds pages. Claude produces work. If you want to know the filing fee for an LLC in your state, a search of your Secretary of State's website is faster and more reliable. If you want a one-page comparison of three states written for your co-founder, with the fees you already looked up, Claude is the right tool. The best results come from combining them: Claude's web search feature can look things up and cite sources, and you can paste official pages into the conversation so it works from the real text.

A realistic picture of time saved

Owners who use Claude daily commonly report saving somewhere between three and ten hours a week once their prompts and Projects are set up, with most of the saving in writing and reading tasks. That range is an estimate from practice, not a measured statistic, and your own number depends on how much of your week is spent on text. The first two weeks usually save little because you are learning. The payoff comes after you have saved good prompts and loaded your business context into Projects.
