KDP Paperback Cover Size and Spine Width: Exact Formulas, Worked Examples and Checks
A KDP paperback cover is one PDF that wraps around the book: back cover, spine and front cover, plus 0.125 inches of bleed on the outside edges. Cover width = bleed + back width + spine width + front width + bleed, and cover height = bleed + trim height + bleed. Spine width is your page count multiplied by KDP's paper factor (0.002252 inches per page for white paper, 0.0025 for cream).
Get one number wrong and your title text drifts onto the spine, or your barcode lands on artwork. Below are KDP's exact formulas, worked examples for the trims most authors use, and the checks KDP applies at upload.
Key takeaways
- Spine width depends only on page count and paper type, not trim size.
- Every KDP cover needs 0.125" bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges.
- No spine text below 79 pages (80 if you use Cover Creator).
- Rebuild the cover any time the interior page count changes.
- KDP's free cover calculator generates a template; use it to double-check your own math.
The formulas KDP uses
KDP publishes these in its "Create a Paperback Cover" help page (as of October 2026).
Spine width
| Interior type | Spine width per page |
|---|---|
| Black ink, white paper | 0.002252" (0.0572 mm) |
| Black ink, cream paper | 0.0025" (0.0635 mm) |
| Premium color | 0.002347" (0.0596 mm) |
| Standard color | 0.002252" (0.0572 mm) |
Spine width = page count x factor.
Page count means every page in your interior PDF, including blank pages and front matter. KDP counts pages, not leaves, so a 300-page PDF is 300.
Full cover size
- Width = 0.125" + trim width + spine width + trim width + 0.125"
- Height = 0.125" + trim height + 0.125"
Cream paper is thicker, which is why the same page count makes a wider spine on cream than on white. If you plan to switch paper types after publishing (KDP allows switching between cream, white and groundwood for black-ink books), check the cover in the previewer first, as you may need a new cover file.
Worked examples for common trim sizes
All figures in inches, rounded to three or four decimals.
| Book | Spine | Full cover (W x H) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 x 9, 300 pages, white | 0.676 | 12.926 x 9.25 |
| 6 x 9, 300 pages, cream | 0.750 | 13.000 x 9.25 |
| 5 x 8, 200 pages, cream | 0.500 | 10.750 x 8.25 |
| 5.5 x 8.5, 79 pages, white | 0.178 | 11.428 x 8.75 |
| 8.5 x 11, 120 pages, white | 0.270 | 17.520 x 11.25 |
| 8.5 x 8.5, 40 pages, premium color | 0.094 | 17.344 x 8.75 |
Two things stand out. First, a thin book has a spine narrower than a pencil, which is why KDP bans spine text under 79 pages: there is no safe room for it. Second, large trims like 8.5 x 11 (popular for puzzle, activity and workbooks) produce wide cover files, so check your design software's canvas limits.
Step-by-step: building a cover that passes review
- Finalize the interior first. Export your print-ready manuscript and note the exact page count.
- Pick ink and paper. Black on white or cream, groundwood, standard color or premium color. This sets the spine factor and cannot change ink type after publishing.
- Calculate the spine with the factor above, then the full width and height.
- Generate KDP's template. In the cover calculator, enter binding, interior type, paper, trim and page count. Download the PNG/PDF template and compare its dimensions with yours.
- Set up the canvas at full cover size, 300 DPI, CMYK if your software supports it.
- Place guides for the trim lines, the spine fold lines, the safe area and the barcode box.
- Design the front and back with all text at least 0.125" inside the trim. Keep front and back text out of the spine area.
- Add spine text only if you have 79+ pages, sized to leave at least 0.0625" on each side.
- Leave the barcode area clear. If you don't supply a barcode, KDP places one on the lower right of the back cover in a 2" x 1.2" white box. Anything under it is covered.
- Hide the template layer, flatten, embed fonts and export a single PDF.
- Upload and check the previewer, then order a proof.
From experience: On puzzle and activity books, page counts often shift late as you add or remove a puzzle section. Each change moves the spine. Keep the cover in a layered source file with the spine as its own group so a page-count change is a five-minute fix, not a redesign.
Interior size vs cover size: don't confuse them
Bleed works differently inside the book. If any interior page has images or color reaching the edge, the whole interior file must be set up with bleed:
- Interior page width with bleed = trim width + 0.125"
- Interior page height with bleed = trim height + 0.25"
So a 6 x 9 interior with bleed is 6.125" x 9.25". Only the outside edge gets bleed on interior pages because the inside edge is bound.
Interior margins also depend on page count. KDP's minimum inside (gutter) margin is 0.375" for 24 to 150 pages, 0.5" for 151 to 300 pages, 0.625" for 301 to 500, 0.75" for 501 to 700, and 0.875" for 701 to 828. Outside margins must be at least 0.25" without bleed or 0.375" with bleed. Our puzzle book guide shows how this affects grid layouts.
Design rules KDP enforces
- Bleed on all covers. Backgrounds must extend 0.125" past the trim on outside edges.
- Borders are risky. KDP allows 0.125" production variance, so thin borders can trim unevenly. If you use one, it should sit at least 0.25" inside the trim.
- Spine shift. KDP treats a small spine shift (it quotes 3.2 mm) as acceptable print variance, so avoid hard-edged color blocks that begin exactly at the fold; they make any shift obvious.
- Minimum 7-point text and enough contrast with the background.
- Matching details. Title, author and edition on the cover must match your metadata exactly.
- 300 DPI images flattened to one layer.
- No spot colors or embedded color profiles. Convert spot colors to CMYK.
- File limits. Under 650 MB to convert; KDP recommends 40 MB or less.
Troubleshooting common cover errors
| Error or symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Cover size doesn't match" at upload | Page count or paper changed after cover was built | Recalculate the spine and resize the canvas |
| Spine text rejected | Fewer than 79 pages, or text too close to the fold | Remove spine text, or keep 0.0625" clearance |
| Thin white edge in the proof | Background stopped at the trim line | Extend artwork 0.125" past the trim on outside edges |
| Barcode covering artwork | Design placed in the barcode area | Keep the barcode box clear, or supply your own barcode |
| Fuzzy title in the previewer | Low-resolution image or rasterized small text | Use 300 DPI images and keep text as vectors |
| Colors look dull in print | RGB images or embedded color profiles | Convert to CMYK where possible; remove profiles and spot colors |
| Upload fails or hangs | File too large or password-protected | Optimize the PDF and remove security settings |
If KDP flags an issue, its email and the previewer usually point to the exact area. Fix that area, re-export and re-upload rather than starting over.
Cover Creator vs designing your own
| KDP Cover Creator | Your own design (Affinity, Photoshop, Canva, InDesign) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Software cost or designer fee |
| Spine and size math | Automatic | You calculate or use the template |
| Spine text minimum | 80 pages | 79 pages |
| Design flexibility | Limited templates | Full control |
| Best for | Simple non-fiction, notebooks, tests | Genre fiction, branded series, activity books |
Cover Creator is a reasonable start for a first proof. For anything competing on a crowded search page, a custom cover usually earns its cost, because the thumbnail is the first thing a shopper judges.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate spine width for a KDP paperback?
Multiply your final page count by KDP's paper factor. For black ink on white paper, use 0.002252 inches per page; for cream, 0.0025 inches; for premium color, 0.002347 inches; for standard color, 0.002252 inches. A 300-page book on white paper has a spine of about 0.676 inches. Always recalculate if the page count changes.
What is the minimum page count for spine text on KDP?
KDP will only print spine text on books with at least 79 pages; if you use Cover Creator, the minimum is 80 pages. If your book is shorter and the cover includes spine text, KDP rejects the cover. Spine text must also sit at least 0.0625 inches from each spine edge so it does not wrap onto the front or back.
What size should a 6x9 KDP cover be?
It depends on page count and paper. The height is always 9.25 inches (9-inch trim plus 0.125-inch bleed top and bottom). The width is 12.25 inches plus the spine. A 300-page 6x9 book on white paper needs a full cover about 12.926 by 9.25 inches; on cream paper, 13 by 9.25 inches.
Does KDP require bleed on covers?
Yes. All KDP paperback covers require bleed, even if your interior does not. Extend backgrounds and images 0.125 inches beyond the trim on the top, bottom and outside edges. KDP trims every book with some production variance, so anything that stops exactly at the trim line can show a thin white edge.
What file format does KDP need for a paperback cover?
A single PDF containing the back cover, spine and front cover as one image, at 300 DPI minimum, with fonts embedded, transparencies flattened and no crop marks or template guides. Files over 650 MB will not convert, and KDP recommends 40 MB or less. Remove file security or the upload fails review.
