How to Make a Puzzle Book for Amazon KDP: From Puzzle Generation to Print-Ready Files

By Omer Muneer Qazi · Updated 2026-10-29 · 11 min read

To make a puzzle book for KDP, choose one puzzle type and one audience, generate original puzzles with a generator or your own script, lay them out in a print-ready PDF at your trim size with KDP's margins, add a solutions section, build a cover for the final page count, and publish it as a regular paperback (puzzle books are not "low-content"). Price it after checking KDP's printing cost so each sale leaves a real royalty.

Below is the full production process we'd use for a word search, sudoku or mixed activity book, with the KDP rules that catch first-timers and the math that decides whether the book makes money.

Key takeaways

  • Puzzle books are regular paperbacks on KDP: free ISBN, Look Inside and Expanded Distribution are available.
  • 8.5 x 11 is popular for puzzles but counts as a large trim, which costs more to print.
  • Keep puzzles original and solvable; test a sample by hand.
  • Don't publish puzzle books as Kindle eBooks; KDP lists them as unsuited for Kindle.
  • Disclose AI-generated clues, word lists or art.

Step 1: Pick a puzzle type and a specific audience

General puzzle books compete with large publishers. A specific audience gives you a reason to exist. Combine one format with one angle:

Format Audience/angle examples
Word search Large print for seniors; themed for nurses, truckers, teachers; faith-based; bilingual vocabulary
Sudoku Graded difficulty for beginners; 6x6 grids for kids; travel size
Crossword Regional or topic trivia; easy crosswords for English learners
Mazes and logic puzzles Kids by age band (6 to 8, 9 to 12)
Mixed activity Holiday or travel activity books for families

Validate demand by searching Amazon for your angle and reading the 2- and 3-star reviews of existing books. Complaints such as "print too small," "answers missing," or "duplicate puzzles" are your product spec.

Step 2: Plan the book's structure and page count

A typical layout:

  1. Title page and copyright page
  2. How to play (one page)
  3. Puzzles (one per page for large print, two per page for compact books)
  4. Solutions section
  5. Optional: an "about the author" or "more books" page (no URLs or promotions that break KDP's rules)

Plan to an even page count. Then check the printing cost before you design anything (Step 6). Page count drives both cost and spine width.

Step 3: Generate original puzzles

You have three routes:

  • Puzzle generator software or websites. Fast, but read the license. Some free generators don't allow commercial use, and many sellers use the same tools, so interiors can look generic.
  • Your own script. If you code, a short Python script can generate word search grids, sudoku with unique solutions, and their answer keys as SVG or PDF. You control fonts, grid size and difficulty, and your interiors won't match everyone else's.
  • Hand-made or commissioned puzzles. Best for crosswords and trivia, slowest to produce.

Whatever route you take:

  • Use word lists you wrote or have rights to; don't lift lists from other books or sites.
  • Make sure each sudoku has exactly one solution.
  • Check grids for accidental offensive words in word searches.
  • Solve 10% of puzzles by hand before you lay out the book.

From experience: When we built puzzle and activity books for KDP, generating puzzles with our own scripts was the step that paid off most. It let us change grid size or difficulty across the whole book in minutes and produce matching answer keys automatically, which removed the most common reader complaint: wrong or missing solutions.

Step 4: Lay out a print-ready interior

Trim size and bleed

Choose your trim in KDP's Print Options. Common choices are 8.5 x 11 (large trim) and 6 x 9 (regular). Most puzzle interiors don't need bleed. If any page has color or images reaching the edge, set the whole file up with bleed: page size = trim width + 0.125" and trim height + 0.25".

Margins

KDP's minimums (as of October 2026):

Page count Inside (gutter) margin Outside margins
24 to 150 0.375" 0.25" (no bleed) / 0.375" (bleed)
151 to 300 0.5" same
301 to 500 0.625" same

Treat these as minimums. Puzzle grids near the gutter are hard to use in a bound book, so center grids with generous inside space.

Typography and grids

  • Use fonts you're licensed to use commercially and embed them in the PDF.
  • For large-print titles, choose clearly larger type and test it in the proof copy with someone from your target audience.
  • Keep grid lines dark enough to print well on black-ink paper.
  • Number every puzzle and put its solution number on the answer page.

Ink and paper

Black ink on white paper is standard for puzzles. Color interiors cost far more per page. Groundwood paper is about 5% cheaper per page than white or cream for black-ink books.

Export as a PDF at exact trim size, fonts embedded, images at 300 DPI.

Step 5: Build the cover

Calculate the spine from the final page count (white paper: page count x 0.002252"). A 120-page book on white paper has a spine of about 0.27", which allows spine text because it's over 79 pages. A full 8.5 x 11 cover for that book is about 17.52" x 11.25". Our cover size and spine width guide has the formulas and a checklist.

Cover tips for puzzles: show a puzzle grid, state the format and audience in large type ("Large Print Word Search for Adults"), and make sure the title text matches your KDP metadata exactly.

Step 6: Check the economics before you publish

On Amazon.com (as of October 2026), black-ink paperbacks cost a flat fee up to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus a per-page charge. For large trims like 8.5 x 11, that's $2.84 flat, or $1.00 + $0.017 per page. The royalty is 60% of list price at $9.99 and above, 50% below, minus printing.

8.5 x 11, black ink Print cost Royalty at $7.99 Royalty at $9.99 Royalty at $11.99
100 pages $2.84 $1.16 $3.15 $4.35
120 pages $3.04 $0.96 $2.95 $4.15
150 pages $3.55 $0.44 $2.44 $3.64
200 pages $4.40 Not allowed (below minimum list price) $1.59 $2.79

Two lessons: crossing $9.99 changes the royalty rate, and adding pages costs more than authors expect on large trims. A 6 x 9 version of the 120-page book costs $2.44 to print. For more, see KDP royalties and printing costs explained.

Quality control before upload

Readers judge puzzle books harshly on mistakes. Before you upload:

  1. Solve a random sample of puzzles from the start, middle and end, not just the first few.
  2. Check every solution page matches its puzzle number.
  3. Print two test pages at home at 100% scale to check grid size and line weight.
  4. Hand the proof to someone in your audience, such as an older relative for a large-print book, and watch where they struggle.
  5. Search the interior for duplicates if you generated puzzles in batches.
  6. Read the front matter aloud for typos; it's the part Look Inside shows.
  7. Check the copyright page names you (or your imprint) correctly and credits any licensed fonts or art where the license requires it.

Step 7: Set up the paperback on KDP

  1. Create a new paperback on your Bookshelf.
  2. Write a clear title and subtitle; avoid keyword stuffing and words like "bestselling."
  3. Leave the Low-content box unticked; puzzle books aren't low-content.
  4. Choose seven keywords and three categories (see our keywords and categories guide).
  5. Take the free KDP ISBN.
  6. Select ink, paper and trim; upload interior and cover.
  7. Answer the AI question for text and images. AI-written clues, word lists or AI cover art must be disclosed (our AI disclosure guide).
  8. Preview every page, order a proof, then set your price and publish.
  9. Skip the Kindle eBook edition for puzzle content.

Frequently asked questions

Is a puzzle book a low-content book on KDP?

No. KDP's low-content help page lists puzzle books and coloring books as generally not low-content, because their pages are not repetitive fill-in templates. Publish a puzzle book as a regular paperback. That means you can use KDP's free ISBN, get the Read Sample feature, and enroll in Expanded Distribution if you want it.

What trim size is best for a puzzle book?

8.5 x 11 inches is the most common choice for word search, sudoku and large-print puzzle books because it gives big grids and room to write. 6 x 9 suits travel-size books. Note that 8.5 x 11 is a large trim on KDP, so each copy costs more to print than a 6 x 9 with the same page count.

Can I publish a puzzle book as a Kindle eBook?

It is not recommended. KDP's content quality guide lists puzzle books among content unsuited for Kindle, because the main purpose is writing on the page, and such books may be rejected or removed. Publish puzzle books in paperback or hardcover. If you want a digital product, consider printable PDFs sold on your own site.

Do I need to disclose AI if I used software to generate puzzles?

Disclose content that an AI tool generated, including AI-written clues, word lists, trivia or illustrations, and AI-generated cover art. A conventional algorithm that arranges your own word list into a grid is not generative AI in the usual sense. If you are unsure, KDP's definitions favor disclosure, and answering yes carries no penalty.

How many puzzles should a KDP puzzle book have?

There is no rule. Many word search books put one puzzle per page with solutions at the back, which makes about 80 to 100 puzzles in a 120-page book once you add front matter and answer pages. Decide by price and printing cost: every extra page on a large trim adds about 1.7 cents to the print cost on Amazon.com.
