How to Get Your First Client on Upwork: A Practical Playbook for New Freelancers

By Omer Muneer Qazi · Updated 2026-10-29 · 11 min read

To get your first client on Upwork, narrow your profile to one specific service, show two or three relevant samples, apply only to small and clearly scoped jobs from clients with hiring history, and write short proposals that solve the client's stated problem in the first two lines. Budget your Connects ($0.15 each as of October 2026), track replies weekly, and turn the first job into a review and a follow-on contract.

The first client is the hardest because you have no reviews. Everything below is about reducing a stranger's risk in hiring you.

Key takeaways

  • Specialize: "Shopify speed optimization" beats "web developer."
  • Pick winnable jobs: small scope, clear brief, client with payment history, few proposals.
  • Treat Connects as a budget; a 16-Connect proposal costs $2.40.
  • Upwork's fee is 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you apply.
  • Over-deliver on job one, then ask for the review and the next milestone.

Step 1: Choose a niche that clients search for

New profiles compete on trust, not breadth. Pick one service where you can show proof today:

Too broad Specific and searchable
Web developer Shopify theme customization and speed fixes
Python programmer Python scripts to automate Google Sheets and CSV reports
Designer Amazon KDP book covers and interior formatting
Data analyst Power BI dashboards for small e-commerce stores
AI developer Customer support chatbot on WhatsApp using an LLM API

Search Upwork's job feed for your chosen phrase. If you see steady posts with budgets you'd accept, the niche is viable.

Step 2: Build a profile that answers "can you do my job?"

  1. Title: service plus outcome or stack. Example: "Shopify Developer | Theme Customization, Speed and App Integrations."
  2. Overview: the first two lines show in search results. Lead with who you help and what result, then list services, tools and how you work. Skip "hardworking and passionate."
  3. Portfolio: two or three items that match your niche exactly, each with problem, what you did and result. Screenshots, a short Loom-style video, or a GitHub repo all work. Our guide to a remote developer portfolio that gets hired covers structure.
  4. Skills: choose the tags clients filter by, in your niche.
  5. Rate: set an hourly rate you'd be happy to earn after Upwork's fee. Upwork's rate calculator shows your net amount.
  6. Identity verification: completing it adds a verification badge clients can see, which helps when you have no reviews.
  7. Photo and availability: a clear, professional photo and accurate hours.

From experience: Working remotely with clients in the US, UAE, Canada and Malaysia, the profiles and pitches that convert best are the ones that name the client's stack and problem back to them. "I've done this exact thing on Shopify Plus" lands faster than a long list of skills.

Step 3: Understand the money before you apply

Freelancer Service Fee. Upwork charges 0% to 15% per contract. You see the percentage when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and it's locked once sent. Example from Upwork: to net $20/hour at a 10% fee, bill $22.22/hour.

Connects. Proposals cost Connects, priced at $0.15 each and sold in bundles. The number per job varies with project size, scope and demand and can change while the post is live. Upwork's Connects calculator uses examples of 4 (low), 8 to 12 (medium) and 16 (high) Connects per proposal.

Proposals per month Connects each Monthly cost
20 8 $24
20 16 $48
40 12 $72

When Connects come back. Only if the client cancels before hiring or Upwork removes the post. Not if the client rejects you, hires someone else, the job expires, or you withdraw.

Free Connects. Some freelancers get monthly free Connects through offers; you also earn 30 Connects each for the Rising Talent, Top Rated and Top Rated Plus badges. Freelancer Plus ($19.99 a month as of October 2026, per Upwork) includes 100 Connects a month. Unused Connects expire one year after they're issued.

When you don't need Connects. Responding to a client's invitation, accepting a client's direct offer, and selling a Project Catalog project don't cost Connects. A strong, specific profile makes invitations more likely.

Step 4: Pick jobs you can actually win

Before spending Connects, check the job post and client panel:

  • Payment method verified and some hiring and spending history.
  • Reviews from other freelancers that sound reasonable.
  • Proposal count and interviewing status. Many proposals or several interviews already reduce your odds.
  • Scope you can deliver in days, not months. First jobs should be small.
  • A brief that matches your portfolio closely.
  • Posted recently. Early proposals get read.

Skip posts that ask for free work, want communication off-platform before a contract, or offer payment outside Upwork. Those are classic scam patterns and violate Upwork's terms.

Step 5: Write short, specific proposals

A first-client proposal should be readable in 30 seconds:

  1. Line 1: restate the client's problem and your fix. "You need your Shopify product pages to load faster on mobile; I'd start by auditing the theme's app scripts and image loading."
  2. Line 2 to 4: one relevant proof point with a link.
  3. A short plan: three bullet steps.
  4. One smart question that shows you read the brief.
  5. A clear next step: "Happy to do a 15-minute call or start with the audit as a first milestone."

See the full structure and examples in how to write a winning Upwork proposal.

Should you boost? Boosting lets you bid extra Connects for one of the top four slots on a client's list. You pay the boost only if you finish in the top four or the client interacts while you're boosted. It can help on strong-fit jobs; don't boost generic applications.

Step 6: Deliver job one like it's a case study

  1. Confirm scope in writing in Upwork messages before you start.
  2. Use milestones on fixed-price work so payment protection applies to each stage.
  3. Communicate daily with a short update, even if it's "on track."
  4. Deliver a little more: a short Loom walkthrough, a README, or a list of next improvements.
  5. Ask for feedback at handover and suggest the logical next milestone.

Keep all communication and payment on Upwork for the first contracts. It protects you, and it's how reviews accrue.

Step 7: Measure and adjust weekly

Metric What it tells you Fix if low
Proposals viewed Is your first line compelling? Rewrite the opening around the client's problem
Replies or interviews Does your proof match the job? Narrow niche, add matching samples
Hires Is your plan and rate credible? Offer a smaller first milestone

Ten carefully chosen proposals with a clear niche usually teach you more than fifty generic ones.

Mistakes that keep new freelancers stuck

  1. Applying to everything. Twenty generic proposals burn Connects and teach you nothing.
  2. Copy-paste openings. Clients see the first lines in their list; "Dear Sir, I am an expert" gets skipped.
  3. Pricing so low it signals risk. Rock-bottom bids often attract the hardest clients.
  4. Portfolio that doesn't match the job. A logo sample won't win a Shopify bug fix.
  5. Ignoring the client panel. No payment method, no hires and poor reviews are warnings.
  6. Moving off-platform early. You lose payment protection and the review you need.
  7. Going quiet mid-project. Silence worries clients more than a small delay you explain.

Notes for freelancers in Pakistan, the UAE and Malaysia

  • Time zones are a feature. From Pakistan (UTC+5) or the UAE (UTC+4), you can deliver overnight work for US clients. Say so in proposals and agree on a short overlap window for calls.
  • Payouts. Set up and test your withdrawal method before your first milestone is released. Our guide to Payoneer vs Wise vs bank transfer compares options.
  • Pakistan only: registering as a freelancer with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) costs Rs 1,000 for a new registration and Rs 2,000 to renew (as of October 2026) and is useful for banking and tax treatment of IT export income. Check current rules with a tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get the first client on Upwork?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on your niche, profile quality, how carefully you pick jobs, and how many well-targeted proposals you send. Freelancers who apply to small, specific jobs that match a clear specialty usually land work sooner than those sending generic proposals to large, crowded posts. Track proposals, views and replies weekly and adjust.

How much do Upwork Connects cost?

Connects cost $0.15 each and are sold in bundles (as of October 2026). The number needed to apply varies by job and can change while the post is live; Upwork shows it on the job post. A proposal needing 16 Connects costs $2.40. Connects are refunded only if the client cancels the job or Upwork removes the post.

What fee does Upwork take from freelancers?

Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract (as of October 2026). You see the exact percentage when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and it is locked once the proposal, offer or contract is sent. If money is refunded to a client, Upwork returns the fee you paid on that amount.

Should I lower my rate to get my first Upwork job?

A modest first-project discount can help, but very low rates attract difficult clients and anchor your profile cheaply. A better approach is to bid normally on small, well-defined tasks where you can show a relevant sample, or offer a fixed-price first milestone. Raise rates after you have a few strong reviews.

Can I get Upwork clients without spending Connects?

Yes, in some cases. Upwork says you don't need Connects when a client invites you to bid, sends you an offer, or buys your Project Catalog project, so a complete, specialized profile matters. You can also bring existing clients onto Upwork through Direct Contracts. Most freelancers still need to send proposals to land the very first contract.
