Stripe Fees Explained: What You Really Pay per Transaction (US, 2026)
A clear breakdown of US Stripe fees: card rates, international and conversion fees, ACH, disputes and instant payouts, with examples and ways to lower them.
Stripe's headline rate is easy to remember: 2.9% plus 30 cents. But that is only the starting point. International cards, currency conversion, disputes, instant payouts and optional products like Billing or Tax each add their own fee. If you price products or services without knowing your real cost per transaction, you can quietly lose several percent of revenue. This guide breaks down Stripe fees for US accounts as of 2026.
Warning: Stripe updates pricing. Every figure here is as of 2026 and should be verified on stripe.com/pricing before you rely on it.
US standard pricing at a glance
| Fee | Standard US rate (as of 2026, verify) |
|---|---|
| Domestic cards and wallets (online) | 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction |
| International cards | + 1.5% |
| Currency conversion | + 1% (when a conversion is required) |
| ACH Direct Debit | 0.8%, capped at $5 |
| Dispute received | $15 per dispute |
| Dispute countered | $15, returned if you win |
| Instant Payouts | A percentage of the payout (around 1.5%, minimum 50¢; verify) |
Stripe also offers products with their own pricing, such as Billing for subscriptions, Tax for sales tax calculation, Invoicing features and Radar fraud tools. Check whether any you enable carry additional fees.
Worked examples
A $100 domestic card payment
$100 × 2.9% = $2.90, plus $0.30 = $3.20 fee. You receive $96.80.
A $100 international card with currency conversion
- Base: 2.9% + 30¢ = $3.20
- International card: 1.5% = $1.50
- Currency conversion: 1% = $1.00
- Total fee: $5.70. You receive $94.30.
A $10 payment
$10 × 2.9% = $0.29, plus $0.30 = $0.59 fee, which is 5.9% of the sale. The fixed 30 cents matters a lot on small payments.
A $5,000 invoice paid by card vs ACH
| Method | Fee | You receive |
|---|---|---|
| Card (2.9% + 30¢) | $145.30 | $4,854.70 |
| ACH Direct Debit (0.8%, capped at $5) | $5.00 | $4,995.00 |
On a single large invoice, ACH saves $140.30. For B2B services, offering ACH can be the biggest fee saving available.
Effective rate by ticket size
The smaller your average transaction, the higher your effective percentage.
| Payment | Fee (domestic card) | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $5 | $0.45 | 8.9% |
| $20 | $0.88 | 4.4% |
| $50 | $1.75 | 3.5% |
| $200 | $6.10 | 3.05% |
| $1,000 | $29.30 | 2.93% |
If you sell low-priced products, bundles and minimum order amounts protect your margin.
How to build fees into your prices
Rather than absorbing fees blindly, include them in your pricing math. To find the price that leaves you a target amount after Stripe's standard domestic card fee:
Price = (Target amount + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029)
Example: You want to receive $250 for a service.
($250 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $257.78
You might round to $258 or simply set your service price at $260 and treat processing as a normal cost of doing business. For a product sold mostly to international buyers, use the higher combined rate in the formula instead.
| You want to receive | Price to charge (domestic card) | Price to charge (international card + conversion, 5.4% + 30¢) |
|---|---|---|
| $25 | $26.06 | $26.74 |
| $100 | $103.30 | $106.03 |
| $500 | $515.24 | $528.86 |
These calculations set a floor for your price. Your real price should also reflect value, competition and your other costs.
Fees outside Stripe's own pricing
Your total payment cost can include items Stripe does not charge directly:
- Bank fees for incoming transfers or foreign accounts
- Accounting time to reconcile payouts, which bundle many payments minus fees
- Software such as invoicing or subscription tools layered on Stripe
- Platform fees if you sell through a marketplace or app that uses Stripe Connect
Reconcile payouts monthly so you can see gross sales, fees, refunds and disputes clearly in your books.
Refunds
When you refund a customer, Stripe generally does not return the original processing fee. A $100 sale refunded in full still costs you about $3.20. High refund rates therefore cost real money and can also attract account reviews.
Disputes and chargebacks
When a cardholder disputes a payment, the bank pulls the funds back immediately and Stripe debits your balance for the amount plus the dispute fee ($15 in the US as of 2026). If you counter with evidence, another $15 applies, returned if you win. If you lose, you lose the sale, the fees and often the product or service you delivered.
Ways to reduce disputes:
- Use a clear statement descriptor so customers recognize the charge
- Send receipts and confirmation emails
- Make refunds easy to request before customers go to their bank
- Keep delivery evidence and signed agreements
Instant Payouts
Standard payouts arrive on your normal schedule. For established US accounts, settlement is typically two business days. Instant Payouts to an eligible debit card or bank account arrive within minutes for a fee, around 1.5% of the payout with a minimum (verify). Use them only when cash flow truly requires it; on a $10,000 payout, the fee is about $150.
Surcharges: be careful
You may be tempted to pass card fees to customers. In the US, card network rules and state laws limit surcharging. Some states restrict it, surcharging debit cards is not allowed, and disclosure rules apply. Offering a discount for ACH or cash is generally simpler. Check card network rules and your state law before adding a surcharge.
How to lower Stripe fees
- Offer ACH Direct Debit for large or recurring B2B payments.
- Raise minimum order values or bundle low-priced items.
- Reduce refunds with clear product descriptions and policies.
- Prevent disputes with recognizable descriptors and fast support.
- Avoid unnecessary currency conversion by pricing in the currencies you can settle in, where supported.
- Use Instant Payouts sparingly.
- Ask about custom pricing once your volume is significant. Stripe offers volume discounts and custom packages for larger businesses.
A worked example: monthly fees for a consultant
A consultant bills $15,000 a month: two $5,000 retainers by card, one $5,000 retainer by ACH.
| Payment | Fee |
|---|---|
| $5,000 card | $145.30 |
| $5,000 card | $145.30 |
| $5,000 ACH | $5.00 |
| Total | $295.60 |
Switching both card clients to ACH would cut monthly fees to $15.00, saving $280.60 a month, or about $3,367 a year.
