Ceramic Coating Pricing: How Much to Charge for Ceramic Coating Packages
How detailers price ceramic coatings: product and labor costs, correction time, package tiers by durability, a pricing formula, examples and warranty tips.
Ceramic coatings are the highest-ticket service most detailers offer, and the one most often mispriced. Some new detailers copy a competitor's $499 "ceramic special" and discover they worked 12 hours for less than they make on two full details. Others quote $2,000 without the skill or setup to deliver. This guide shows how to price ceramic coating packages from your real costs and time, then position them so customers understand what they are paying for.
What the customer is really buying
A coating locks in whatever paint condition is underneath it. That means the price covers three things:
- Preparation: wash, iron decontamination, tar removal, clay and full drying
- Paint correction: at least a one-step polish for most packages, multi-step for swirls and scratches
- Application and curing: panel prep wipe, careful application, leveling, inspection and curing time
Preparation and correction usually take far longer than applying the coating itself.
Step 1: Estimate your hours
| Stage | Sedan, good paint (one-step) | Large SUV, swirled paint (two-step) |
|---|---|---|
| Wash and decontamination | 1.5 hours | 2 hours |
| Paint inspection and taping | 0.5 hours | 0.75 hours |
| Paint correction | 3 to 4 hours | 8 to 10 hours |
| Panel wipe and coating application | 1.5 to 2 hours | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Wheels, glass, trim (if included) | 1 hour | 1.5 hours |
| Final inspection and handover | 0.5 hours | 0.5 hours |
| Total | 8 to 9.5 hours | 15 to 17.75 hours |
These are illustrative times. Track your actual hours on your first ten coatings and price from those.
Step 2: Add product and overhead costs
Coating product cost varies by brand, durability and whether you buy consumer or professional-only lines. Include:
- Coating product for paint, plus any separate wheel, glass or trim products
- Compounds, polishes and pads (pads wear out)
- Panel prep solvent, microfiber towels and applicators
- Bay rental if you do not have a garage or shop, since coatings need shade and controlled conditions
- A share of insurance, marketing and equipment wear
For many detailers, total materials for a coating job land somewhere around $60 to $250, depending on products and vehicle size. Verify with your own supplier prices.
Step 3: Apply the pricing formula
Price = (Hours × Target hourly rate) + Materials + Bay or overhead cost
Worked example: sedan, one-step correction, 3-year coating
- Hours: 9
- Target hourly rate: $85 (what you need to cover your time, taxes and overhead)
- Materials: $120
- Bay rental: $60
Price = (9 × $85) + $120 + $60 = $765 + $180 = $945
You would round to $950 or present it as a $995 package with a maintenance wash included.
Worked example: large SUV, two-step correction, 5-year coating
- Hours: 16
- Target hourly rate: $85
- Materials: $220
- Bay rental: $120
Price = (16 × $85) + $220 + $120 = $1,360 + $340 = $1,700
If your market will not support that price, either reduce the correction level, choose a shorter-durability product, or decline the job. Do not quietly cut prep time; that is how coatings fail.
Step 4: Build tiers customers can choose from
Three tiers make the decision easier and lift the average ticket.
| Tier | Correction | Coating durability (as marketed) | Illustrative sedan price | Illustrative large SUV price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | One-step enhancement | 1 to 2 years | $700 to $900 | $900 to $1,150 |
| Signature | One-step plus spot correction | 3 years | $950 to $1,200 | $1,200 to $1,500 |
| Ultimate | Multi-step correction, wheels and glass coated | 5+ years | $1,400 to $2,000+ | $1,700 to $2,500+ |
Prices are illustrative as of 2026. Check what established coating installers in your area charge, and remember that certified installers of premium brands often charge more.
Tip: Most customers choose the middle option. Make it the package you most want to sell, with the best balance of your time and margin.
Step 5: Price condition, not just size
Two identical SUVs can need completely different correction. Inspect the paint in person, ideally with a paint depth gauge and good lighting, before giving a final quote. Offer a "starting at" price online and confirm the final price after inspection.
Common upcharges:
- Heavy swirls or scratches needing extra correction steps
- Previous coatings or sealants that must be removed
- Excessive contamination or overspray
- Paint protection film areas needing special care
How to present the price without losing the sale
Customers who call about "ceramic coating prices" are often comparing your quote with a $299 offer they saw online. Explain the difference in plain terms, and lead with the result rather than the product.
A simple script:
"Most of what you're paying for is the preparation. Before the coating goes on, we decontaminate and polish the paint so it looks as good as it can, because the coating locks that finish in. Our Signature package includes a full one-step polish, a three-year coating and your first maintenance wash. For your SUV that's $1,350. I can come take a look at the paint this week and confirm the exact price."
Then send a written quote the same day with:
- The package name and what it includes, step by step
- Before-and-after photos from similar vehicles you have done
- The expected time the car will be with you
- Aftercare requirements and the maintenance plan option
- Deposit terms, often a non-refundable deposit to hold the booking
Warning: Avoid promising that a coating makes a car "scratch proof," "permanent" or "never needs washing." Overpromising leads to disputes and bad reviews.
If the customer cannot afford the tier they want, offer a lower tier or a sealant package instead of discounting. A discount teaches customers your price was not real; a different package keeps your hourly rate intact.
Step 6: Sell the aftercare
A coating is not "no maintenance." Explain clearly:
- Wash with pH-neutral soap; avoid automatic brush washes
- Keep the vehicle dry for the curing time stated by the manufacturer
- Book maintenance washes and periodic inspections
Bundle the first maintenance wash into the price and offer a maintenance plan. This turns a one-time $1,000 job into recurring revenue.
Warranties: promise only what you can keep
If you offer a warranty, tie it to:
- The manufacturer's terms for that product
- Scheduled maintenance visits documented in writing
- Clear exclusions: rock chips, scratches, accidents, improper washing and environmental damage
Photograph the vehicle before and after, and have the customer sign the aftercare instructions.
Pricing checklist
- Actual hours tracked for your first ten coatings
- Target hourly rate calculated from your income and overhead goals
- Materials cost per job by vehicle size
- Bay rental or garage requirement built into quotes
- Three tiers by correction level and durability
- In-person paint inspection before final pricing
- Aftercare instructions and maintenance plan offer
- Warranty terms written and signed
Mistakes to avoid
- Pricing from a competitor's promotional price without knowing your hours
- Coating outdoors in sun, wind or dust
- Skipping correction to hit a low price
- Promising "scratch proof" protection
- Forgetting to schedule the first maintenance visit
