Hire Tech Lead for Startup — the engineer who makes the team better

Your startup has developers, but nobody's really leading them technically. PRs sit unreviewed, architecture happens by accident, and the loudest engineer sets the standards by default. What you need isn't another developer — it's a tech lead: someone senior enough to set the technical bar and close enough to the code to enforce it.

I'm Omer Muneer Qazi, a Fractional CTO & Solutions Architect with 15+ years leading engineering teams and 100+ projects shipped across 6 countries. I step into startups as a part-time tech lead: reviewing code, guiding architecture, and turning a group of developers into a team that ships reliably. More on how I engage and my leadership background.

Why Omer

Why startups hire Omer as tech lead

Tech leads are judged by the teams they build. Across 15+ years, 100+ projects, and $25M+ in enabled revenue over 6 countries — with leadership at Phaedra Solutions and product teams at Integriti, Napollo, Nabidios, Nello, and EverestX — I've led engineers across SaaS, ecommerce, and AI products, in stacks from React and Node.js to Shopify Plus.

I lead from inside the work, not above it. See engagement models or discuss your team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

We have senior developers. Why do we need a tech lead?

Senior ICs and tech leads are different roles. Without explicit technical leadership, decisions get made by whoever speaks loudest, standards drift, and juniors have no one to learn from. A tech lead makes leadership someone's actual job.

Can a part-time tech lead be effective?

Yes — the highest-leverage tech-lead work (reviews, architecture decisions, mentoring, planning) fits naturally into part-time. What's needed is consistency and authority, not 40 hours.

Will you write code yourself?

Yes, selectively: prototypes, critical-path fixes, and the occasional PR to stay credible. But my primary output is a team that ships better without me, not lines of code with me.

How do you handle an underperforming developer?

Directly and fairly: clear expectations, specific feedback, a defined improvement window, and honest assessment. I've managed engineers up and managed them out — both with dignity.

Can you help us promote someone internally to tech lead?

That's often the best outcome. I assess your team's readiness, mentor the candidate through a transition period, and stay available as their sounding board afterward.
