Good, to me, is measurable and legible. Every third-party call is idempotent - Stripe webhooks keyed so a retry never double-charges, outbound jobs that can safely run twice. Database access is paginated and indexed, with the N+1 queries that quietly kill a product caught in code review, not production. There's structured logging and tracing wired in from week one, usually OpenTelemetry into whatever you already pay for, plus Sentry on both client and server, so when something breaks we read the answer instead of guessing. And the whole thing is reproducible: a new machine or a fresh deploy comes up from one command, because environments that drift are where weekends go to die.

The mistakes I'm most often hired to undo are predictable. A product glued together by a rotating cast of specialists, where nobody owns the boundary between services and each blames the other. Auth bolted on late so roles and permissions leak. A schema that was never designed - just accreted - until a simple report takes nine seconds. Secrets hard-coded, no migrations, deploys done by hand and prayer.
