Freelance SaaS Developer Rates
What a freelance SaaS developer actually charges for, what moves a quote up or down, and how to compare two quotes that look nothing alike.
Rates are a scope question, not a number
There is no single freelance SaaS developer rate, and any page that publishes one without context is misleading you. A quote is a function of scope, seniority, risk and time: a billing integration for an existing product is a different engagement from a multi-tenant MVP, and a developer who owns architecture decisions charges differently from one who implements tickets.
This page explains the factors honestly so you can compare quotes on equal terms, and it pairs with a free rate calculator that works from your own numbers — target income, billable hours, expenses and tax allowance — rather than presenting a preset figure as a market fact. I am Omer Muneer Qazi, a senior SaaS developer, and the factors below are the ones I use when scoping work myself.
Deliverables
- Scope breakdown — What the rate covers: discovery, architecture, build, testing, deployment and handover, itemised so you can see where the money goes.
- Seniority and ownership — The difference between ticket implementation and owning product decisions, and why the two are priced differently.
- Billing and integration load — How payment, subscription, auth and third-party integrations change effort, and which integrations are genuinely hard.
- Risk and timeline pricing — Why fixed scope, tight deadlines and regulated data change a quote, and when a day rate beats a fixed price.
- Quote comparison checklist — A checklist for comparing quotes: what is included, what is assumed, what happens on overrun, and who owns the code.
- Your own rate calculation — A calculator that derives a required rate from your own income target, billable hours, expenses and tax allowance — no preset market figure.
Process
- Discovery call
A free call to scope the product, the integrations and the timeline, and to say plainly whether freelance is the right shape for it.
- Written scope and rate basis
A scope document naming what is included, the rate basis, and the assumptions behind it, before any work starts.
- Build in the open
Weekly demos, a staging link, and a codebase with tests and documentation, so progress is visible.
- Handover and support
Documentation, deployment notes and a support window, so the product does not depend on one person after launch.
The SaaS stack that shapes cost
Most SaaS products share a core stack: a web framework such as Next.js or React with a Node or Python backend, Postgres for data, Stripe for billing, an auth provider or custom auth, and a hosting platform such as Vercel, AWS or a VPS. Cost drivers sit at the edges of that stack: multi-tenancy, usage-based billing, real-time features, data migration, and integrations with CRMs, accounting tools or legacy systems.
Choosing boring technology for the core and spending complexity only where the product differentiates is the cheapest way to build a SaaS product well. A rate conversation that ignores stack choice is incomplete, because the same feature costs different amounts on different stacks and the maintenance bill differs for years afterwards.
Why hire Omer
- Rates explained, not asserted. You get the factors behind a quote, so you can judge it rather than take it on trust.
- Your numbers, not presets. The calculator works from inputs you supply. Nothing on this page presents a preset figure as a market rate.
- Scope before price. A written scope comes before a price, so the quote you compare is for the same work.
- Senior product experience. SaaS architecture, billing and multi-tenancy are the daily work, not a side offering.
- Direct engagement. You discuss rate and scope with the developer who will build the product.
