Freelance rate calculator
Work out the hourly rate your own numbers require. Nothing is sent anywhere — the calculation runs in your browser, and every number below is one you enter yourself.
Required rate
Enter values above to calculate. Revenue needed = (target income + expenses) ÷ (1 − tax allowance ÷ 100). Hourly rate = revenue needed ÷ billable hours per year. Monthly revenue = revenue needed ÷ 12. All figures come from your inputs only; no rate on this page is presented as a market fact.
What each input means
Target income is what you want to keep. Billable hours are only the hours clients pay for — most freelancers bill far fewer hours than they work, and using total working hours here understates the rate. Working weeks exclude holidays. Expenses are your business costs. Tax allowance is the share you set aside for tax, as a percentage you choose.
What the result means
The hourly rate is the rate that covers your income target, your expenses and your tax allowance at the billable hours you entered. If the rate looks high, the levers are billable hours, expenses and target income — changing any one changes the result. This is arithmetic on your inputs, not a market rate and not financial advice; tax treatment varies by country and situation, so check yours separately.
